Didn't play much this week.

Finished chapter 6 and reached chapter 7 in Ys IX: Monstrum Nox.

Similarly cleared world 5 and reached world 6 in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. At 6-3 right now. This is the toughest world yet, because of both the slippery ice and some of the platforming requires some twitchy-ish reflexes.

What about all of you? What have you been playing and/or plan to play?

Started playing Haiku the Robot yesterday. I like the retro graphics and my (mediocre) pogo skills from Hollow Knight come in handy

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh cool, it's on my wish list. How are you liking it?

[–] bravesirrbn@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

Only 2h in or so, but enjoying it so far!

Decided to play through Banjo-Tooie again since its on Switch now. This time though, I'm trying a new playthrough style.

As soon as I had access to the Cheats Temple, I put the code in to double my speed as well as unlock every stage without needing the jiggies. So now I'm running around to each stage trying to unlock as many of the moves/shortcuts as I can!

It's fun going into a stage with most of the moves I need already unlocked, makes the game flow way differently. Gives it a much bigger metroidvania feel.

Never played Banjo-Tooie (or Kazooi), how do they hold up?

[–] KotActually@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

Incredibly well! Though I'm quite biased as they're my favorite game series. They both represent the peak of the 90s colectathon games.

If you're considering playing them, I'd say startwith the PC Recomp of Kazooie. Easily the best way to experience it! Updated controls and some QoL improvements reallt go a long way. It's a decently breezy game (aside from that dang boiler room) so a playthrough shouldn't take too long.

Tooie however is a MUCH bigger game, and my personal favorite. While Kazooie can be a mostly linear adventure, Tooie feels more like a Metroidvania with its backtracking elements. The writing is stuffed with British humor and a healthy dash of self awareness too.

Just played through the campaign for Titanfall 2. Awesome. Now I understand why people fucking hate Apex. Never played that either, but Titanfall 2 was actually a really good game and then EA comes along and shits all over it and wants them to make mobile games and stuff. Really, EA is just a bunch of evil morons.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I have been playing a bit of Apex and it isn't a bad game. Much better than Fortnite, IMO. I haven't played Titanfall though.

Disclaimer: I don't play much online / PvP games, so don't have much idea how they compare with other such games.

I'm an old counterstrike player, so highly polished comp fps is my home. But I don't play any of them anymore because none of them have good foundations, so I've been sticking to PvE stuff the last decade or so.

It goes like this:

Two guys from Infinity Ward left that unhappily and then founded the titanfall studio.

They needed money, so ea bankrolled them.

They released Titanfall 1, which was pvp only. It was supposedly great.

Then released Titanfall 2, which was pvp, but also has a really good campaign. 2016

Immediately after, ea acquires the studio. 2017

They released a mobile game. 2017

Relaxed apex

Released some jedi games

Where titanfall 3 continuation of the story???

Titanfall 2 is on sale for like 6 bucks on steam right now. I highly think it's worth it just for the campaign. Don't read anything, don't watch anything, just go play it. It's a short campaign, like 5-12 hours depending on how fast you play through stuff like that.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Thanks for the details, I knew the gist of it but since I didn't used to play PvP at all, never paid them much attention. Will try Titanfall 2 soon.

Also playing DK tropical freeze!! Just finished the final boss, agree on the world 6 being hard, a lot of sweat to clear them perfectly, so good luck haha. Gonna open the rest of the levels later!

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Thanks! I have to go back and open the rest of the levels too, but will only do that after finishing the game.

Baldurs Gate 3 with a couple people :)

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Nice! What are you playing as?

[–] Azzu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

A fairy ranger in the one game, and a tiefling sorcubus in the other :)

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Interesting!

[–] potentialfox@lemmus.org 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Had to restart ocarina of time on my switch because all of my progress got lost after an update :(

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Oh, sorry to hear that. How far along were you?

[–] Phelpssan@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Playing Hades 2!

Finally got a win over the "surface" path boss! Though it seems like I'll need to do it a few more times to progress. I also managed to unlock the remaining aspects of the weapons.

Playing Witch on the Holy Night!

About halfway through Chapter 8.

Playing Trails Beyond the Horizon!

I know I should be focused on Witch on the Holy Night, but it's impossible for me to resist a new Trails game. And it starts hot, with the prologue having us play with the Arkride Solutions Office alongside a few surprise additions.

Returning CharactersRean and Altina are back (and she's more grown up now), and I'm happy they're keeping her as Rean's "default" partner - she was one of my favorite characters on the latter half of the Cold Steel games.

But more important, we finally get to play with Kevin again! It's been so, so long since we last had him in the party! And it looks like he'll have an important role, working alongside the "Imperial Picnicking Front". C and Lapis already joined and Swin and Nadia already got mentioned a few times.

That alone got me so hyped I doubt I'll be putting down this game anytime soon.

Currently in Chapter 1.2, wrapping up a few 4SPGs before I move on.

Edit: Super Robot Wars Y just announced DLC2 will be released next week with 16 new missions. I'm glad no game I'm interested is releasing anytime soon, I have a lot to catch up now.

New Trails game and Super Robot Wars DLC! Christmas came early for you this year!

[–] Phelpssan@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Yes! And in two weeks we have an extended holiday here in Brazil for me to play like crazy.

Just finished Super Mario Odyssey and going to start with Sackboy.

Super Mario Odyssey was a fun ride, really liked how you can play different monsters and objects. I just found the last kingdom a bit annoying.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Sackboy is good but it isn't anything close to Odyssey, so keep that in mind, as you are starting it right after Odyssey.

[–] ModernRisk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

No worries, that's alright. Kind of just want a fun and decent platformer to just get my mind off real life, lol. Kind of avoiding the heavy story games at the moment (such as Hellblade Senua 2, AfterLove EP and Alan Wake 2)

[–] Skyline969@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I picked up the Castlevania collection collection, all three of them. Had a quick play of Dawn of Sorrow and now I’m trying to 100% Aria of Sorrow. When I’m not doing that, the new Animal Crossing update has me hooked. And when neither of those sound appealing I’ve been very slowly chipping away at Pokémon Legends Z-A.

Pokémon games just don’t hit like they used to. Maybe I’m just outgrowing them, maybe they don’t make them like they used to. Maybe both.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Or maybe they keep making them like they used to, and you got bored of it? 😀 Try some other monster collection games, and see if you enjoy them.

I am planning to get Castlevania collection sometime this year. Never played any Castlevania so looking forward to trying them out.

Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter - it’s one of my favorite jrpg series (although the second chapter is the true jewel in the trilogy) so I enjoy this remake a lot. I’m already at the final boss so I’m fairly optimistic I’ll finish it this weekend.

I may also continue playing a bit Pioneers of Pagonia. I’ve been playing it every now and then as an early adopter during development but it’s finally released now. Still not sure how I feel about this game.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Pioneers of Pagonia is on my wishlist, hoping for a console release soon. Otherwise will just pick it up on PC.
