OK. I explain.

In other language, I use freely: "peronista", "izquierdista", "derechista"... It means simply someone supporting certain ideas or movement. Behold, it looks really similar:

trumpista - trumpist

But... "a friend"... said that "trumpist" is peyorative, despective, like cultists, sectarian group. An I should use "trump supporters".

Dude, I've been reading in English for years and I still sound like a damn 3‑year‑old when I try to communicate.

Trumpist fits, because Trumpism is a cult. If your friend thinks being called a "Trumpist" is pejorative, then maybe they need to rethink their support for a cult leader.

This is a common thing in English. Both terms are technically correct but carry different connotations.

It's like the difference between "Forgive me Father for I have sinned" and "Sorry daddy, I've been naughty" both sentences have the same definite meaning, but wildly different implications
