If you want an entertaining read about this, October by China Mieville is amazing. iirc (reading it a couple years ago) it revolved around WW1 and the German front; the provisional government kept doing the hideously unpopular business as usual while Lenin was calling for revolutionary defeatism (i.e. "yes, I really am saying that Russia the state should lose this war against Germany the state"). It's a miracle that after the Bolsheviks took power Petrograd didn't fall. The Bolsheviks were also trying to put the brakes on taking power for the entire summer, while being urged on by various factions.
