Is it pointillist? It's hard to tell from the resolution of the photo. Would you care to detail your process a little?

It's actually just regular shading, but the paper I use has a bit of tooth that gives it that look. I start with an HB outline, then shade in HB to give it three dimensional form. I then move onto darker leads, 4B and up to place the shadows. I then move back to lighter leads to blend everything together and work on the mid tones and details.
