In this monumental artwork Satan proudly gazes upon the capital of the underworld a golden palace rising above a river of boiling lava while legions of demons march toward him awaiting his command

But the most unsettling part is that this apocalyptic vision wasn’t entirely fantasy The palace’s architecture closely resembles the British Parliament under construction at the time and the river of lava was inspired by the filthy disease-ridden Thames River of 19th-century London
