For some odd reason I only discovered this rather ominous song recently, and was mighty impressed by its' timely message. Altho it was released all the way back in 1990, I find that it could not be more relevant to today's world, in which unchecked capitalism is throttling millions of people (or billions, really) around the world, while the rich and the oligarchs only get richer and more immune to consequences.

George Michael was a king. If you didn't see it, check out that post where he had a better take on Joy Division than Morrisey.

Haha, I did catch that interview sometime back. Fun reading the comments in the link, though!

I also noticed that I forgot to comment on why I shared this here, which I've now corrected, above. It might also be worth adding that George may have been the most charitable musician in modern history, but it's impossible to tell for sure, because most of his donations were evidently anonymous. Such an A+ human being...

George Michael was really intelligent and his lyrics were so full of thought and open to self-criticism and having the freedom to change your mind. They were also inclusive and Freedom 90 celebrates questioning yourself and being open to outside perception and letting the world in so that you can reinvent yourself.

Damn, I missed what you said a couple days ago. Sorry about that.

open to self-criticism

letting the world in so that you can reinvent yourself.

My gods... yeap!

I believe his father was from Cyprus and his mother from England. So not Greek-British although his name is Greek because they speak Greek in Cyprus

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 1 points 4 months ago

Thanks. Good catch.

His father, Kyriacos "Jack" Panayiotou,[11] was a Greek Cypriot restaurateur who emigrated from Patriki, Cyprus, to England in the 1950s. --WP

So his dad was indeed Greek, and a member of that ethnic group who lived in Cyprus. I've updated the title.

Nice, but what is his connection to graphic novels? Or is this group just “stuff I like”?

We just had that convo last week. See the sidebar and then read the pinned "MEA CULPA" post if you like. I'm also working on an updated sidebar that defines things in a little bit clearer terms, and I'll run it past the community soon for feedback.

This particular post (and song) is shared because it's Euro artistry, and because I also find the message surprisingly timely. I don't intend to stray from GN's and BD's very often, but I recognise that many things have overlap in the arts & media, and I don't mind occasionally acknowledging that with an example or two.

Meanwhile, do feel free to share the kind of material you like, here.
Cheers!
