US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at blocking states from enforcing their own artificial intelligence (AI) regulations.

"We want to have one central source of approval," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday.

It will give the Trump administration tools to push back on the most "onerous" state rules, said White House AI adviser David Sacks. The government will not oppose AI regulations around children's safety, he added.

The move marks a win for technology giants who have called for US-wide AI legislation as it could have a major impact on America's goal of leading the fast-developing industry.

He... Has zero authority to tell states how to enforce their own laws. Executive Orders can't do this. They're not laws, they're directives for the FEDERAL government to follow within existing laws.

He doesn't know or care, nor does his base.

Cool story bro. As far as I'm aware, presidential executive orders don't carry any weight outside of the federal executive branch. Unless those state laws are superseded by federal laws passed by the legislative branch, that executive order is worth less than the paper it was printed on.

It's wild that this whole article seems to treat this as having any legal impact. How could you go through all the effort of writing an article and getting comments without doing the basic research about whether an executive order has any impact on state laws?

Normalizing it. The BBC has a lot of Americans and corporation people on their board.

This is from last year before the election, but it's probably very similar if not the same:

They only care about "State's Rights" when they allow Texas to murder women pregnant with unviable fetuses
