The Education Department announced the settlement Tuesday in a lawsuit challenging former President Joe Biden’s Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) loan repayment plan. The plan has been at the center of an ongoing legal battle since last year.

The agreement would put an end to the SAVE plan, which means borrowers enrolled in the program will need to find a new, legal plan and start making payments again, according to the Education Department.

The agreement will have to be approved in court before it takes effect, the agency said. Last year, borrowers enrolled in the SAVE plan had their loans placed in forbearance, which means their payments have been on hold.

The US government has set a great example of financial responsibility for its citizens this year. If you don't wanna pay your obligations, just don't pay them.

Noted.

I’m sure those incoming defaults will make our economy nice and turgid again

It worked in 2008. Well, a few made money from that. The rest of us suffered in different ways. Sounds like a legit economy.

Will you refuse though? They are able to garnish wages & by that point it will have accrued even more.

This shit sucks...

Garnishing wages with sharply increase unemployment as many people would just quit their jobs as it's not worth it anymore

Look, I don’t even want forgiveness anymore… just let me claim them in bankruptcy at the bare minimum.

[–] fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 days ago

I don't have anything to lose in bankruptcy except my debt so there's literally no reason for me not to, in fact since I'm not going to be buying a house or anything for the next 7 years I have nothing but upsides

I know people who chose their whole career arc based on trust in the government to forgive their loan based on the legislation which granted public/non-profit workers forgiveness after 10-years. They were making low minimum payments over those years based on their low salaries…

Boy are those people fucked financially.

We can thank Republicans! Of course there will be no reckoning or return to that commitment. Truly fucked.

This is a dumb move for him too, the economy is going to get so much worse if they take more money out there
