So, in the neighbourhood I grew up in there is a brook (I think it's bigger than that but thas a tangent) that has a population of ducks. Once and a while there would be a duck spread across the ice. Other ducks would be picking at it, along with the seagulls.

Yeah, anyone who has raised chickens knows that they are one minor injury away from the other chickens eating them.
It doesn't matter how much room you give them, if one starts pecking another, the rest will join in.
Now, if you don't give them much room, they peck way more often, but they never actually stop.
Ducks are a cruel bunch. They gang rape and drown females. The rape being not stopped due to the receiving partner dieing.
I give bread to ducks out of spite.
