After arriving in the United States from Somalia back in 2009, Fiqy never expected to be contacted by a major political campaign—yet Trump’s team reached out, asking him to help energize Somali-American voters before the election.

He took on the task with pride. But now, as a sweeping ICE operation targets Somali communities across the Twin Cities—and after hearing the president repeat harsh, blanket remarks about Somalis—Fiqy says his support has collapsed.

Anyone who supported Trump in 2024 has a broken brain. Waking up just because he happens to specifically be racist again you is just…I don’t even know what say.

To bad, so sad…fuck off?

[–] TomMasz@lemmy.world 138 points 1 week ago (3 children)

You're shocked the most openly racist president since Andrew Johnson hates Somalis, people from Africa?

[–] AngularViscosity@piefed.social 57 points 1 week ago

Everyone needs to be called out by name for them to understand, I guess. Put two and two fucking together, America.

[–] ronl2k@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago

the most openly racist president since Andrew Johnson

That honor goes to Woodrow Wilson, especially since he was president during a supposedly more enlightened time.

His comments on Haitians weren’t a clear enough signal? JFC, you dense assholes.

[–] bold_atlas@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

This person believes that Americans are a very wise and fair people who can see that Somalis are nothing like Haitians and no way would Americans just consider them both to be scary foreign black people. This is pretty much how all naive immigrants view the USA before they get a rude awakening.

Edit: Nevermind this person was here since 2009? They're just a shill who was paid to trick his own people into voting for their tormentors.

[–] philpo@feddit.org 12 points 1 week ago

He literally did similar comments DURING HIS FIRST TERM about Somalis as well.... But...people have the attention span of a TikTok Video these days.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 84 points 1 week ago (7 children)

Any black person supporting an outspoken racist like Trump is just fucking stupid.

Straight up. He’d already been openly racist, specifically against Somalis….and everyone fucking else.

At this point we should just admit we fucked up…conservatives are an incurable cancer, and just nuke the fucking thing from orbit. I have no hope when people are this stupid.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 27 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I know a gay Trump supporter. He's ecstatic about what's going on and I know I have better people to give a shit about if he ever gets hauled away.

[–] MyMindIsLikeAnOcean@piefed.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

This doesn’t surprise me.

I got a job as a chef at a queer piano bar a few years back. Up until that point I had kind of put gay people on a pedestal…like…I thought all the adversity made them innately virtuous.

But while working there I had the stupidest revelation I’ve ever had: Queer people are, in fact, exactly like other people. What I mean by that is my big eureka was that some gay people that are terrible people, some are great people, and every shade in between. Some of the most openly transphobic people I’ve met, for example, are from the gay community.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This person is a family friend who I've, unfortunately, heard talk about his life. His family is incredibly toxic and he just normalized it. About two years ago, I heard him ranting about how Metrosexuals ruined his gaydar and I told him I hadn't heard anyone use that word in over ten years. He also hates lesbians, but trans people haven't come up. I doubt he cares for them.

[–] MyMindIsLikeAnOcean@piefed.world 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Oh yeah…in my experience gay men can be very mean to lesbians. I had a drag king dishwasher who was continuously sexually harassed by staff and customers…they said vile things to her on the daily. Some refused to call her by her “stage” name…despite having no problem with drag queens.

"Why, I didn't think the Nazis would round me up, the people who helped them!"

[–] HazardousBanjo@lemmy.world 63 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The minorities who supported Trump need to be studied as the most fucking stupid, lacking any self preservation whatsoever, people to have ever lived.

The fact these people ever made it to voting age without forgetting how to breathe, or running to an electrical socket with a fork is nothing short of a reality breaking anomaly.

[–] falseWhite@lemmy.world 34 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They think "Now that my family and I got in, let's pull the ladder and fuck the rest. As long as I am good, others can fucking die."

I.e. garbage people.

[–] ronl2k@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

They think “Now that my family and I got in, let’s pull the ladder and fuck the rest. As long as I am good, others can fucking die.”

That sounds like the voting pattern of US Hispanics.

This is true Leopards Ate My Face material. Anyone who supported Donny 2 Inches, and helped him gain power, CANNOT be hurt enough !

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 31 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I have a very hard time feeling sympathy for a bunch of people who voted against their own best interests. Anyone who didn't see this coming, needs to wake the fuck up, and start paying attention. It's not like he was hiding who he was. Anyone with half a brain should have been able to see this coming all the way back to when Obama was still in office.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Not defending the idiots, but I think social media played a far significant role in brainwashing people than we realise. The stupid social media algorithms corral them to seeing only certain contents and distort their world view. I wonder what social media showed to the non-white people to even support Trump. I hava poc colleagues who seemed to trivialise and have casual approach to Trump, with one stating "some of the things he says makes sense." I wonder what those things "makes sense" from poc point of view. Even before Trump 2.0 came, I have disliked him for being fascist-adjacent. Now, that the mask is off, people thought that he'd stay with his far-right adjacent policies in his first term, and they lived to regret fucking around and finding out.

[–] ferrule@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago (3 children)

sounds like you are defending them. it wasn't as if Trump was being coy about it. He created a muslim ban. He said "They are eating the pets."

All this stuff he said in public, live on TV. Using social media as a source of news just shows you are dumb.

Absolute fucking idiots. I used to live near Dearborn and a lot of the more conservative segments of the Muslim community gave me similar vibes. How dumb can you be? Kicking your asses out, at best, is the selling point of the candidate you're voting for?? Okay....

[–] HazardousBanjo@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago

I find minorities and women who support Trump generally are not only some of the dumbest fucking people you'll ever meet in your life, but also very often narcissistic and mentally/emotionally unstable.

Virtually all of them are mentally and often physically abusive to people around them, and they're constantly trying to control every situation they're in, even if they have no business nor authority doing so.

Trump is exactly that, so most see themselves in Trump.

[–] hanrahan@piefed.social 6 points 1 week ago

It's usually becase of their stand on gay/trans issues.

Apparently what other people do with thier genitals is top of mind for many "conservatives".

I think we need to understand the rational reasons immigrants that are entering as a minority into this country might adopt rightwing/conservative beliefs.

Inequality, colonialism as a tactic to police the behavior of populations, fascism and hate REQUIRE the even more vulnerable to be turned against the vulnerable or else it all falls apart.

What the specific levers that are that are used to get immigrants to vote against their own interests whether it be fear, manipulation, lies or threats is less interesting than the fact that this entire structure of oppression can be shattered by simple, meaningful unjudgemental solidarity with one another as average human beings who want the same basic things.

Your following paragraphs don't really explain what the rational reasoning is, just that it's required. What are they?

[–] HarkMahlberg@kbin.earth 4 points 1 week ago (6 children)

I tried to make sense of that, uh, word salad, and kinda boiled it down to this:

What the specific levers are ... is less interesting than the fact that this entire structure of oppression can be shattered by simple, meaningful unjudgemental solidarity...

And if that's OP's point, well, I think the past year has proved that it's not true. The system of fascism is not vulnerable to solidarity and tolerance. In 2024, vulnerable voters rejected the idea that they are vulnerable and did not vote accordingly. Instead they looked at even more vulnerable people and said "Well at least I'm not that guy! That'll never happen to me because I'm not (insert prejudice here)."

We can blame the propaganda machines of Fox and Facebook and Joe Rogan, and they deserve their share of the blame, but I firmly don't believe Trump voters were merely duped. I think they already believed in a social hierarchy where, among their few luxuries, they get to look down on other people. They came to America, in their eyes the most powerful country on the planet, so regardless of how they got there, they were already more special than their homeland counterparts. They carried with them their prejudices, their views on women, their views on crime, homelessness, and joblessness, and conservative media tapped into those beliefs to form the backbone of their disinformation campaign.

the rational reasons immigrants ... might adopt rightwing/conservative beliefs

In short, they didn't "adopt" anything, they brought their own nascent bigotry with them.

✨ Have the day you voted for ✨

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

he declared, “I don’t want [Somalis] in our country.”

The following day brought even stronger remarks, as he added, “The Somalians [sic] should be out of here. They’ve destroyed our country.”

Hearing these words—offered with no proof—has been jarring for people like Fiqy, who once believed the Republican Party could build a real partnership with Somali Minnesotans.

“That sort of language is dehumanizing and deeply hurtful,” Fiqy said, reflecting on the shock and disappointment within his community.

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

I for one am shocked that the dude that proclaimed “They’re eating the dogs!” during a presidential debate would make harsh racist remarks.

[–] Sunshine@piefed.ca 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

You got played by propaganda.

[–] stardust@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Hard to call it propaganda when so many red flags had to be intentionally ignored to justify voting for them even if there was one stance you liked about them. Its why you heard so much gas lighting from supporters of its just a joke. You are over reacting. You are just a doomer. TDS.

They knew all the negatives about him. Its why they put so much effort into downplaying it.

[–] falseWhite@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

No. They just either stupid or fucking garbage. These people usually think, now that I got in and I have it good, let's close the borders and fuck everyone else.

Anyone with even the smallest amount of intelligence could see what Trump really is - a racist rapist idiot.

It actually blows my mind how these people didn't realise that. There were like a million opportunities to see through Trump's bullshit. Basically every time he opens his mouth.
