How is trying someone for femicide different than trying someone for murder? Isn't murder (regardless of gender) already punishable with life in prison?

according to wikipedia it usually depends on the circumstances.

one could get a lighter sentence (21years to life) if it was "a gamer moment" (sometimes killing someone in blind rage can be classified as manslaughter) - but now certain acts fall under the term "femicide" (jealousy, control reasons, honor killing etc.)
