Except you are buying into propaganda John Brown had actual plans that you are ignoring mainly involving maroon communities are hit and run tactics modeled after places like Jamaica and Haiti where they were successful.
According to the Biography of John Brown by WEB DuBois, he specifically modeled his plans after the Peninsular Campaign of the Napoleonic Wars, the OG guerillas (I mean, asymetic warfare is as old as warfare, but the first literal "guerillas").
