T-Mobile is siding with the Trump Administration and far-right extremists like Elon Musk. It’s time for people of conscience to find a better phone carrier.

T-Mobile is partnering with fascist Elon Musk’s satellite company Starlink, funneling profits into Musk’s pockets through its T-Satellite program.

Not only is T-Mobile siding with a billionaire CEO who supports far-right authoritarian governments around the world, they’ve also:

  • Ended their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) program to appease the Trump regime so the admin would fast track approval of two major acquisitions.
  • Lobbied for Trump’s disastrous budget bill that will strip 13 million Americans of healthcare to pay for tax cuts for the millionaire and billionaire class.
  • Engaged in vicious union busting to stop workers from forming a union.
  • Servicing Trump Mobile on the T-Mobile network, ignoring glaring conflicts of interest.

Okay, yes, fuck T-Mobile. But these points can reasonably be applied to all mobile telecoms in the US. Serious question: who is a less evil cellular provider to whom we can switch?

Also, there are plenty of great MVNOs that unfortunately use T-Mobile's network. Calyx leaps to mind. Even if I were to budget $5000 per year for my Internet access, who can even deliver 250Mbps mobile access with >1TB of transfer per month? And could I do it without resorting to one of the other evil fuckers?

The faq at the bottom asks "aren't all carriers bad/who should I move to?", the answer is yes they're all bad in different ways but the focus of this is on trump mobile, starlink and musk and tmob is the only carrier aligned with them at the moment on trump mobile.It's the entire point to reduce or remove consumer choice, and if you're feeling discouraged that is the point.

Switching carriers and porting a number is pretty easy compared to what it used to be but not everyone has the luxury of good coverage from all carriers, or the technological or financial know-how to end a contract and potentially have financial impact from cancelling. Most carriers offer nice signup incentives so its likely people could do it without cost to them but there is still a bit of time and effort.

If people can't put in a bit of time and effort to fight fascism then I guess we deserve to be where we are.

Yep. Recently did it while on the bus home from AT&T to Verizon. By the time I got home, I was already on Verizon’s network with my phone number. Super easy! AT&T just didn’t work at the places I hung out at, so it was time to switch and get an actual 5G carrier.

I can get that on Verizon on mobile. But I have several friends using Calyx, and it’s just so cheap and reliable.

Well, I spend most of my time on wifi and I don't watch video on my phone. And I have a desktop computer with an actual monitor.

Pretty much just Lemmy and Signal when I'm out and about.

And yeah, Canadian cell service sucks. Telco monopoly gives you the bare minimum for the maximum rent extraction.

Genuinely incomprehensible 1TB a month though.

$50CAD after tax per month. It is quite an old plan, though... I'm looking at the website and it seems like they have 50GB/mo available now for the same price. Eesh.

I'd love a plan that was half the price with a lower data cap...

Holy moly. That is very, very expensive! I'm surprised there aren't lower priced ones. My sister lives in Canada and she said it's partly down to geography so they have to pump in more for infrastructure which made sense.

A new provider opened up here a while ago and I got €10 a month "for life" as an early subscriber which is 16CAD at current rates. Unlimited data, calls and texts. I'm never changing.

I double checked my usage while I was at it. The last few months were 0.5, 0.8, and 1.7GB.

My data MVNO is my only "home" data connection because nothing else is available that isn't Starlink. That connection also runs my media and image servers to which my partner's and my phones connect. Between my day job, side gig, and the de-Googled services, it's pretty common to hit 2 to 4 TB in a month.

In some areas there are no other viable options. When I moved here Verizon was the only way to go, but since they shut down their 3g network they have not replaced it with anything. So it is only spotty LTE or TMobile. And that is not saying that Verizon is any better as a company, I used to work for them. They are all bad companies.

Meh. Both Google and Apple support trump too, so what about your phone?

I can't get a traditional POTS landline here anymore. The only "landline" option is VOIP, now.

LibrePhone isn't a thing yet, but hopefully soon(ish).

I wholeheartedly support giving as little money and data to Apple, Google and the rest of Big Tech. IMO second hand Pixel with GrapheneOS is the best option, so that's what I have.

Exactly, they bought metronet so I have zero options. Fuck these companies being allowed to be monopolies. They also bought Mint so I am stuck with tmo for awhile.

My family's had them for years but we're gonna switch, soon as I figure out our best option around here. I work all over the place and their network stretches pretty well into the rural areas but im sure ill make do. I need a business line I've been putting off anyway, might as well knock it all out together.

Every phone company in the US sucks. But we don't often have much choice due to them sucking so much. Where I am, TMO is the only useful provider that has no dead zones. It's also super cheap for me since I've had them since my first phone back in 2003/2004.
