I like obscure things. I'm a little put off by media that's extremely mainstream because, for whatever reason, discussion just feels less passionate and real when it's a widely known IP with 10s of millions of fans. But the problem with being into obscure things is that there is often a real lack of "fandom" for lack of a better word. Maybe you can get a convo going with like minded folks but it's damn hard to find them.

I also get into popular things slowly. For example, I'm still reading Marvel and DC comics that came out in the mid 2000s. So I'm that guy whose really interested in the adventures of Quilt-Man and his colorful cast of characters and I hyperfixate on dudes that died in 2007 and have never been seen since. Try making that conversation not sound forced

So true. It's like when I was trying to find someone to have a conversation with about Italo Calvino and his work, or hell actually Han Suyin too, since she's pretty obscure nowadays.

It doesn't help that I'm a STEM major in the most boring white guy part of STEM [basically Engineering that isnt comp sci] so everyone is just focussed on that and doesn't have time or care for literature and stuff, especially critical analysis [yes yes I know I'm trying to make some friends outside of that sphere]

The worst part is when suddenly your obscureish fandom goes mainstream. Like I read the whole backlog of Deadpool and Dr. Strange comics in like 2010-2012. Along come the movies and not only are they watered down and prettied up they also gutted major parts of their personal struggle. And now everyone is happy to talk about Deadpool but the character they are talking about is a 2 dimensional cuddle bunny with a sassy attitude not tortured monster trying to pretend to be a better person so he can get some from one of the x-men.

I have this with Star Wars. I have always been a huge star wars nerd. Visited conventions, had tons of Star Wars games, figures, clothing. Could memorize all the lines from movies and shows and was called a nerd for it.

Disney acquires the rights and it becomes a bit more mainstream and disneywashed. Suddenly it's cool to be a Star Wars enjoyer. Except Disney kinda butchered the series and the EU part of the story line with all the novels from the 90-00's are not incorporated despite being considered canon for a long time. And whenever I bring stuff from the EU up I'm a nerd again lol. Because that isn't the disneyfied version.

It is nice to have 30 years of fiction all to yourself though. Existing as an alternate dimension isn't too bad.

Unfortunately, this is an issue with capitalist culture. When the cultural product revolves on wide appeal and selling something, it is difficult for it to stay unique and interesting, to its roots. Of course, I'm sure this same sort of phenomenon was happening a lot in the past with say, novels, but we live in a cultural time unlike any other. Now that I'm older I've just come to the acceptance that various cultural interests can be immensely popular like Baseball, Rap music, comedy shows, and that others will never be regarded as palatable or interesting to the average westerner, old foreign books, movies, obscure genres of music. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
