The mastodon and lemmy content I’m seeing feels like 90% of it comes from people who are:

  • ~30 years old or older

  • tech enthusiasts/workers

  • linux users

There’s nothing wrong with that particular demographic or anything, but it doesn’t feel like a win to me if the entire fediverse is just one big monoculture.

I wonder what it is that is keeping more diverse users away? Is picking a server/federation too complicated? Or is it that they don’t see any content that they like?

Thoughts?

A not so smart genz member here, and I believe we need a little bit more time for other genz fellas to actively post here.

FWIW, someone on my Mastodon TL suspected the same thing and made a poll regarding the users age. About 850 people voted and 63% turned out to be 30-50 years old.

Here's the toot in question. In Spanish tho https://mastodon.social/@batmanyyo/110668830560740847

Hey, I'm not using Linux... on my desktop

No. Not really. But I’m sure it did a month ago.

Hey! I use Windows. And because I choose to. And I really dislike any unix-like systems to put it mildly.

The rest fits.

Check. Check. And check.

[–] float@waveform.social 2 points 2 years ago

Yep, I'm all three...

[–] dfc09@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I fit none of your 3 categories! But I would say with the slightly less convenient joining process compared to most social media, the Fediverse is going to have to built up by people willing to take that burden, at least at first

I feel personally attacked...!

I'll have you know I am not (yet!) a Linux user. (Later this year, maybe.)

3 for 3 here. I'm not here to buy things. I'm here to disseminate and consume information/news, ask and answer questions, and learn things.

2/3 unless we count my pixel phone which honestly barely does. but yes it's mostly enthusiasts and that will be fine if we get enough movement.

Gen-X, and have been working in technology for 27 years. I run windows as a daily driver but also am running a few host machines in my house with multiple Linux VMs. It's a mix of RockyOS, Ubuntu and arch VMs. Not a single GUI on any of them.

We are always first on the new thing. It's completely normal growth

23 y.o. Indian medicine student(somewhat reluctant). Tech enthusiast(😮‍💨). I hate the official reddit app.

Woo im glad to see so much diversity.

On a side note, I feel attacked.

I gall into most of those categories.

That said, I still have a hard time dropping reddit until a network effect happens here or the multi-feddit stuff can start combining same-named subs across the fediverse.

I spent most of my time on Reddit looking at: various sports, cooking, finance (pf, investing, bogleheads), IT (sysadmin, vmware, homelab), gaming (console and PC and specific game subs), and PC hardware subs. (Plus some for sale places).

I wasn't really one to do much OC, but would participate in comment threads fairly often. I think lemmy/fed has potential, but it's going to need to be simpler for the average person to get logged in and just see the content they want with out jumping through a bunch of searches and hoops.
