Good luck Argentina, it was nice knowing you while it lasted

no shot that wasnt rigged. did this dude do ANYTHING that people liked? didnt he literally just tank the economy and make everyone even more poor?

[–] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 15 points 1 day ago

Do not understimate the power of social media on the younger base.

[–] PoY@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 1 day ago

the wealthiest folks are doing better, everyone else is suffering more. sounds familiar.

“Argentinian voters back Javier Milei's radical economic reforms in midterm elections closely watched by the US.”

“Closely watched by the US” That’s all you need to know

I'm from argentina and I have yet to see one person over 18 years old (because his supporters are 15 years old sigmas, I used to be one lol) who approves his presidency and that's why this result was unexpected.

You see commies? Unlike your failed ideology AnCap does work! All you need is the undying love of mega corporations and a $40 billion loan from the US

[–] GreatSquare@lemmygrad.ml 25 points 1 day ago

Argentina: "$40B loan! Thank God! What are you going to spend it on?"

Milei: "Shares!"

Argentina: 😖

Argentina is so cooked, only way to save it would be a complete overthrow of the peronists or whatever

[–] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 15 points 1 day ago

they're just cooked regardless, peronists have proven to be as incompetent as their counterparts.

[–] Darkcommie@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I have no idea what will happen this could either end predictably (Argentina suffers) or unpredictable (Argentina somehow through the help of the US and the grace of god goes through a golden age)

[–] Vika@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 8 hours ago

The result is more poverty and even less sovereignity. It already happened in the 90's with Menem. He is destroying our local business

[–] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I assure you it will be the former. Argentina is just simply to backwards to pull through the massive foreign debt they have.

[–] Darkcommie@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I expect it to but honestly with everything happening thus far I won’t underestimate the far right to cnatch victory from the jaws of defeat

[–] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It's just not gonna happen. Even the poster child of the emerging far-right in LatAm, Bukele, has it's country in a hole in terms of foreign debt, all the media strategies in the world will not change reality.

[–] Vika@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Bukele himself claimed to be a socialist, what happened to him?

[–] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 4 hours ago

His socialism is akin to when Elon Musk said he was a socialist.

Even if they had monetary sovereignty it would be a difficult ask but they're completely beholden to the dollar.

This is just rearraranging the deck chairs at this point.

At this point in time, the best chance at democracy I see is a giant meteorite hitting DC when all branches of government are in session and actually at work, and even then people will clamor for "strong" leadership.

Apologies to any regular decent people in the area, I'll say a better shot is if a bigger one hits the deep south where I reside, simultaneously.

[–] big_spoon@lemmygrad.ml 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

argentina is doomed, it's like a victim of domestic abuse after being beaten to a pulp and almost dead, asking to return with the abuser or risking to lose its job, what is this boludez?

[–] Darkcommie@lemmygrad.ml 18 points 1 day ago (2 children)

This guy crashed the economy twice and Argentinians still voted for him

[–] big_spoon@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 17 hours ago

maybe the third is the good one...one more crash to awake class consciousness

40BN $ can buy a lot of votes, Yeltsin led Russia into the disaster comparable to WW2 losses and still won after getting much less cash from US.

[–] novibe@lemmy.ml 7 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Yeltsin literally had to bomb the congress of Russia and do a coup though. He was NOT popular and had no support from the people, just from the military.

I mean 1996 elections which were theoretically more or less legit formally, but Yeltsin bought so much votes using fraud and US money so he turned his 8% popularity into win.
