The best channel is through the issue tracker, for example github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui. In practice Im not sure how the UI could be changed to make this clearer. Do you have an idea, or an example how another website handles this?

Better yet would be for the backend software to allow both an image and a link.
That is possible
To get a link post with a custom thumbnail, you add the link and put the image in the thumbnail field.
To get an image post with a link, you make an image post and put the link in the post body.
I confirm, I've personally edited a post 3 times over until a day later I've understood what's exactly happening: https://lemmy.ml/post/37434570
I think the developer is fairly active on the Lemmy.world instance if I remember correctly.
