@michigan I really wish I knew before I spent all the $$$ getting this that in 20 years literally 0 employers would ever ask to see it, and only one even bothered to check with the university. In the future I'm telling my kids to just check the box that says you have a degree, it's literally the same thing.

In case you are wondering I've spent more time trying to unlearn stuff I learned in college than in using any of the information I learned at NMU.

I have no reason to believe that going to a more prestigious school like University of Michigan would have turned out any different.

lots of employers put you into a background check service, which does verify against school records even if they never ask

I can verify that my most of my employers have run a background check on me through a 3rd party, which I had to give consent for and actually fill out the request.

Maybe for some jobs they don't check, but I damn sure wouldn't lie about it. It can come back decades later to fuck you over after you have a great job and all the skills you need.

Anyway, I only have an Associate's and that mostly hasn't held me back. There are a couple of employers that auto-reject if you don't have a 4-year degree (looking at you, GM and Ford), but I also can confirm that for sure Ford background checks you—sneaked in there as a contractor, still background check.

Also a former NMU student but I never finished my degree fully, I list it on my resume but even include that I didn't finish my degree fully and every job I've had has acted like I had the degree with no further questions asked. Like...they just do not actually care enough to look at the full 2 lines of text. It's insane the amount of trust people just have that everyone is playing by their expectations.

I do some seriously privacy-impacting stuff, now, and I can confirm the background IS checked. Some of it is because my wife's family are decent people who are cops, and even family of fed cops here have to be super-clean, and some of it is for work -- it's not secret-squirrel stuff, but it is private-possum stuff.

I'm proud to have kept working through the I.T labour market being savaged by rich idiots, but there's a lot of "keeping the head down". Since I didn't earn my degree before the money ran out, it IS harder to get the interview.

So you may have the degree and not notice its value, but I'm glad for you that you got it because of what I'VE noticed without it.
