This is a weekly thread in which we read through books on and related to imperialism and geopolitics. Last week's thread is here.

The book we are currently reading through is How Europe Underdeveloped Africa. Please comment or message me directly if you wish to be pinged for this group, or if you no longer wish to be pinged.

This week, we will be reading the first and second sections, "The Supposed Benefits of Colonialism to Africa", and "Negative Character of the Social, Political, and Economic Consequences" of Chapter 6: Colonialism as a System for Underdeveloping Africa.

Next week, we will be reading the third and last sections, "Education for Underdevelopment" and "Development by Contradiction" of Chapter 6: Colonialism as a System for Underdeveloping Africa.

Imperialism Reading Group ping!

This and next week will be spent on the final chapter of the book!

Next week, we can have a full discussion about where we go next. My current idea is a brief break of a couple weeks to allow people to catch up and/or finish, and then perhaps we shift continents with a Greg Grandin book, such as Empire's Workshop: Latin America, the United States, and the Rise of the New Imperialism? If you have other suggestions, let me know!

I like the two week break idea because I for one am still a little behind, and I (maybe a little shamefully) never heard of Greg Grandin so the book sounds interesting to me

I don't know anything about that book! So I say we go for it. I'm also a bit fan of Losurdo and would read anything by him here, though it seems we have a focus on imperialism which he has less of.

Please add me to the list.

It boils my blood a bit reading all of the different ways Europeans tried to sell how "good" colonialism was for Africa, but I've also heard people make these same arguments IRL. It's disgusting every time.
