"BOTH PARTIES INCREASED FUNDING FOR ICE."

Below the tweet is a chart titled:

"Boosting ICE funding is bipartisan"

Chart Description:

  • X-Axis (Years): 2016 to 2025
  • Y-Axis (Funding Levels): Ranges from $2B to $10B
  • Bars represent annual ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) funding, color-coded by the administration in power:
    • Gray for pre-Trump (2016)
    • Red for Trump administration budgets (2017–2021)
    • Blue for Biden administration budgets (2022–2025)

Funding Breakdown by Year:

  • 2016 (Gray): $6.2B
  • 2017 (Gray): $6.8B
  • 2018 (Red): $7.5B
  • 2019 (Red): $8.1B
  • 2020 (Red): $8.4B
  • 2021 (Red): $8.4B
  • 2022 (Blue): $8.9B
  • 2023 (Blue): $9.1B
  • 2024 (Blue): $9.9B
  • 2025 (Blue): $10B

Notes at the Bottom:

  • The FY25 budget was passed after Biden left office but continued the FY24 funding level.
  • ICE spending rose by less than $50M.
  • Figures are nominal (not adjusted for inflation).
  • Data Source: CRS, P.L.119–4
  • Chart created by Stephen Semler (stephensemler.com), made with Datawrapper.

Overall Message:

The image highlights that both Republican (Trump) and Democratic (Biden) administrations have steadily increased funding for ICE, implying bipartisan support for increased immigration enforcement spending.

For those wondering why 2017 is gray instead of red for Trump, and why 2021 is red instead of blue for Biden...

Budgets for the current year are set the previous year. So the 2017 budget would have been decided under the Obama administration, same for 2021 being set by Trump.
