As I used to say to my kids, "don't drive like your mother!"

But in fairness to OP, it's often easier to see the path without the tangled underbrush of emotional involvement. And if we can understand why it's so hard for them to do what we know they need to do, we can provide the emotional support necessary, lend an axe, as it were.
