Still dumbfounded by this. Basically, I work in sales where we have two different kinds of products. We have sales goals for each product, and then a total volume sales goals as well. For each product, and in total, we have goals for units sold, volume closed, and revenue generated. So 9 metrics in total.
I work for a Canadian company, so our fiscal year is November 1st-October 31st. 10 months into the fiscal year now and I am exceeding my goal in all 9 metrics for the year. Since our fiscal year is November to October, this means our Q3 is May-July. The summer months.
Over the course of Q3, I took two week long vacations, and was taken out of the office for a week for company wide training. There was also Memorial Day weekend, Juneteenth, and 4th of July weekend as well. Client meetings also slowed down as most people were on vacation, or busy with other summer activities, and business as a whole was way down across the entire company. As a result, I did not have a great Q3.
I was not worried about it all because working in this industry for nearly a decade now, I know that business usually grinds to a halt during the summer, and even with the bad quarter, I was still above all my goals for the entire year. Well despite that, I just got told by my manager that because of my performance in Q3 I have to attend bi-weekly coaching sessions, and be put on a performance improvement plan. I said, "just so I am clear, I am being told that I need to improve my performance despite exceeding all the goals you have given me?" My manager at least apologized to me and said he fought against it, but the higher ups said there are no exceptions.
So now, when I have my annual review at the end of the year, and my results show that I am exceeding all goals, my bonus will still be reduced because of this performance improvement plan.
Also talked to many of my coworkers, and nearly my entire team has been put on one as well. I feel like this company just uses the natural slowdown in business during the summer as an opportunity to reduce all our annual bonuses.
