Somehow Alonso's streak of making the wrong career choice keeps on continuing. One of the most legendary streaks in F1
This is almost certainly the wrong career choice indeed, but it strikes me as a bit of...bad practice that Toto revealed the existence of the negotiations. Is that just me?
Well Alonso was the one boasting that he rejected merc earlier on in the season. Toto is just confirming that the negotiations did take place. I see absolutely nothing wrong with that
Alonso boasting about rejecting Merc is honestly news to me. TIL, so my mistake then!
Idk.. rumour is that Merc only offered one year whereas Aston offered multiple years. Why would you want to go to a team that puts you on a single year contract, likely just as a placeholder for Antonelli. Aston may not be top dog rn but they believe in him, trust him, and are clearly putting the effort in to improve the team with the new facilities they’re building
The difference in current trajectory of Merc vs. Aston? With Merc he would have a good chance of getting wins next season and Antonelli is not certain to get into Merc after one year, especially if Alonso out performed George.
Aston are getting the new wind tunnel and poached a lot of talent. Plus the ~~GP2~~ Honda engine. They might sink, they might swim, but the trajectory after this year may not be so clear cut.
Very unlikely that they turn it around before 26 to the point that they can win a straightforward race. It's so far off for Fernando he'll be older than Brundle before he gets a class leading car again.
At his age I would have taken the Merc, 2 wins out of 3 and could have been 3 out of 3. Merc are far more likely to be at the front than Aston in the short and long term. This wasn't a choice between Aston and Alpine...
