Charcoal is fine. You can savely eat it and smoking is is probably healthier that tobacco.
I'm pretty sure I don't want to risk having pure carbon inserted into my body just in case.
Yes, I know plants and animals are carbon based organisms.
Also, if you mistook a "charcoal" briquette for regular all-natural charcoal, you'd be ingesting a portion of pure Borax and limestone.
