A good friend of mine just asked me if we can have a watch party in the upcoming days over the internet, so we can watch a movie together. They live in another country.

Now, streaming platform have the "Watch Party" option, but is not worth it to pay them an entire subscription just for one movie and one day, so I was wondering if there was an app that allowed me to have a watch party, streaming the movie from a local file.

I want it to be easy to use and have a mobile client/app, since this person is not very techy like me.

Thanks in advance.

Element, the Matrix app, has video and screen sharing calls. Bonus that it's also e2ee, self hostable, and entirely FOSS

Doesn't Matrix lack audio sharing from the screen? You'd have to route your desktop audio into your microphone, unless that's changed.

Oh maybe. I've never used it tbh, so maybe I'm spreading a bit of misinformation
