More serious politics should go in !uk_politics@feddit.uk.

Posts should be related to UK-centric news, and should be either a link to a reputable source, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread.

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

The drilling project is one of two – alongside the Rosebank oil field off Shetland – which were approved by the previous Conservative government.

Both were approved for drilling licences in June 2022, but this was overturned by the Scottish courts after a challenge from environmental campaigners.

A decision on Rosebank, the largest untapped oil field in the North Sea, is being made separately, with energy secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh saying it will take “a bit longer”.

Even though we'll be less dependent on imports? Well paint me the colour surprised!

These projects take years to come online. Also it will all get exported. In 2025 the UK produced 31.4 million tonnes of oil and exported 27.5 million tonnes, over 87% of it. [1] This doesn't make our energy more secure, unlike wind, hydro or solar, just endangers us all and makes billions for rich cunts in the process.

We will likely be the first in the line to buy the fuel, but we have to buy at global market rates, lest Shell go to the next best buyer offering the going rate and they just tank the negligent shipping costs. This isn't a service the capitalists running the fossil fuel companies are offering to the government, they bid to get the right to the gas so they can sell it to whoever is buying at the best price.
