I don't think it is mph. It probably Km/h. But it still is much to fast!

50 mph is almost exactly 80 km/h, which isn't all too uncommon in the rest of the EU.

I thought it happened inner-city. There the speed limit would not be higher than 50 Km/h. But maybe it happened on a country road? Then 80Km/h (50 mph) could make sense.

If you are asking why mph in particular, it is probably because the news source is British so they likely converted it
