Big Win

Socialist commentator Piker has been building his audience for close to a decade, becoming by far the most prominent political voice on Twitch. “My job is to snap people out of [their] stupor,” Piker tells Vanity Fair. On seven-hour daily livestreams, the six-foot-four creatine-taking former frat bro rails against corporate greed and explains things like the Strait of Hormuz in the memeified idiom of his followers, who are mostly white, male, and always online. “[Twitch] is the seedy underbelly of entertainment,” Piker says. The site, intended mostly for gamers, is fringe even by internet standards. But at a moment when the Democratic Party is desperate for, if not its own Joe Rogan, at least one even minorly cool spokesperson, Piker’s success is both instructive and rare. In the past year, Piker’s profile has risen well beyond the digital underworld—think big-league invitations (the Democratic National Convention; this magazine’s Oscar party) and campaign appearances for candidates in the new socialist guard. Piker swears he doesn’t sow controversy on purpose but admits all the attention has boosted his clout. “At the peak of the Iran war, Fox News was running eight stories a day on me,” Piker recalls. With some self-satisfaction, he adds: “They called Jimmy Kimmel the Hasan Piker of ABC, which is insane.”

Achilles’ heel

“America deserved 9/11.” That’s a real thing Piker said during an August 2019 stream, endlessly clipped and quoted. And—surprise—it doesn’t play well. Piker has further stated a preference for Hamas over the Israeli government, called the Hezbollah flag “dope,” and joked that Orthodox Jewish Israelis are “inbred.” He seldom apologizes. Piker’s acerbic brand tests the edges of acceptability. An April bipartisan congressional resolution condemned Piker’s “antisemitic hate-filled rhetoric.” Two months later, the UK Home Office denied Piker entry into the country, citing concerns about public well-being. Freewheeling rhetoric is probably the very thing that made Piker popular, but it has also spawned an unending meta-debate about his legitimacy.

WHAT’S NEXT

As the latest round of Piker backlash crested, Michigan’s Abdul El-Sayed (#40) said he had “no plans” to campaign with his one-time surrogate. For 2028, Piker has his eye on Georgia senator Jon Ossoff (#39) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (#17). When asked if he’s scared of doing more harm than good, Piker answered quickly: “No, not even a little bit.”—Abigail Sylvor Greenberg
