As title says, i want to start self hosting but i have a lot of questions about it. For more context, i want to self host XMPP, matrix, Immich, an email, forgejo and a minimal website. i want to ask you:

  1. Where should i buy my domain and are there any things i should be careful about?

  2. does the end of my domain (idk the specific name but .XYZ) matter at all?

  3. I get that i should use a used PC (i have none lying around), but how old?

  4. Am i willing to self host too much stuff?

  5. Can i use Gentoo, Devuan, or other non-systemd distros as an OS?

Sorry for the noob questions but i struggle to find answers online, feel free to tell me to RTFM ~_~;
Also, i have experience with Linux as a desktop OS, more specifically 3 years, one of which mostly in gentoo, but i’ve daily driven Arch, Artix, Debian, Void among others

  1. I like Gandi. Net being euro based.
  2. Not sure
  3. I'd say as long as it's got dual core with hyper threading at least if you wanna do some of those basic projects. Immich will probably be heaviest IMO. So if you can find a PC from like 2012 or 2014 even. I can run it on my old potato x220 that's managed tolive a long strong life
  4. Nah never willing to host too much.
  5. Yes you can, just takes a bit more caution and just document as you go the differences. I've done most of mine from arch and debian

Gandi’s prices have gone through the roof since they were bought in 2023, I left then.

Got a recommended better priced non stateside one that has privacy respects? I'm down for new just don't know much about privacy respecting registrars

I switched to Infomaniak. Price is good, Switzerland should be pro-privacy, and the overall company is on the better side of tech (if there is one these days)

If you want to really go all in, lebureau.coop should be all positive, and hopefully they are good enough English speakers to serve you :)
