Our cat will definitely tailgate you into the bathroom to solicit head scratches while you’re sitting, but the moment he hears you start to pee, he walks to the other side of the bathroom and sits with his back to you, staring calmly at a spot on the wall. When you’re done, he returns for more head scratches. We didn’t teach him this. It must be standard cat etiquette.

Its their way of protecting you. They got your back. They are looking out for danger the opposite way. Even though in that case it's the wall
