to impress people.
the same reason people drive expensive cars, have large homes etc. it's to show off you have money.
my brother had wedding in Florence, it cost them about 75K, and they took 5 years to pay it down, on top of a 500K mortgage and the 200K student debt from their MBAs. They met in business school... i couldn't go because it would have cost me like $4000 to attend. he still is bitter at me for being a 'cheap asshole' and 'ruining' his wedding... OK buddy...
and it's mostly driven by the women, at least in my experience. some dudes care, but I doubt most care that much. meanwhile I've broken up with several women because they basically thought anything less than a 100+ person wedding that was 50K+ was 'cheap'. and many of those same women... didn't even know that many people really. but they still were addicted to the daydream of big fancy wedding that made other people jealous of them...
most of my personal friends had civil ceremonies and small receptions, but for a lot of people that is looked down on. the 5 weddings i went to in my 20s were basically the cost of gas and a cheap hotel room for 1 night...
my sister got married in Vegas, it was like a pre-paid package, and it was like 25K. She just wanted the convenience, and because it was cheap/accessible for guests. I did attend that one and it only cost me like $300.
I've also had girlfriends who took out personal loans/debt to attend their friends weddings... again because they were destination vacations and they cost $1000s to just attended as a guest. And when they complained about it and I said 'you could have said no' well... least to say those were some relationship ending fights. i remember one woman i was dating, she made about 20K a year, and she spent $5000 to attend her friends wedding in Cancun... least to say we broke up a month after that came out... and she had asked me to help pay for this trip... and i was not invited... lol
a lot of people are totally compelled to spend massive a mounts of money on things because of social pressure/acceptance.
