Downloaded an album online in mp3 , wondering if higher quality can be got from buying and ripping the expensive used CD online (lemmy.world)

Is it better to buy the CD and rip or or is that about as good as it gon' get? Should I quit while I'm ahead

Its literally nowhere else online in a hq format besides YouTube (lq) and various random blogs/sites

No FLACs :( until I change that

Playback device is a much bigger difference than lossless vs. mp3. If you think you're getting a subpar experience, another thing you can try is listening on some different headphones with different frequency responses.

I put .wavs on Bandcamp for my music though -- sometimes artists put higher fidelity files on the pages they more directly control. Rather than ripping an mp3 off youtube.
