It is depicting anasyrma. In some cultures that has traditionally had the power to ward of evil (for example in mine, it has had the power to protect and curse. It is called "harakointi" in Finnish).
I found a new premise for a Dresden Files book. Finally, his misogynistic powers can be used for good!
