The reality is that it has nothing to do with worker productivity at all. The real issue is that so much of our economy is tied up in office building real estate values, to a point where if those office spaces go bust from being unnecessary then it could crash the economy. Especially considering that office space has historically been one of the safest investments, at least prior to mass WFH, and is therefore something that banks themselves are deeply invested in (using everyone else’s money, primarily).
As much as the office space is not needed like it used to be, everyone will be forced to work in them for at least as long as it will take for banks to diversify away from having our entire economy be anchored by investments in them
