even arguing about rank could have been interesting. you're x bajillion lightyears from home, can a rank structure that was part but now cut off from a massive organization survive? should it? does the military answer to the government staff aboard in leau of an elected commander in chief, or is the military in total control because the situation warrante it? or just because they have the guns? where do the civilians fit into that? there are so many interesting angles to explore, they just... didn't

That is a recurring issue? It happens in the show several times? They even have an "attempted coup" to get civilian control - the military command on the ship disobey earth lots of times
