Not to defend them too much but I'd assume that a lot of the employees are just trying to make a living. The department I'm working at was recently taken over and I have a mortgage and a kid so even if I morally disagree with some of the practices of my new employer I can't just quit without uprooting the lives of my family.

It's the same for the majority of workers stuck in big corporate jobs. The capitalist orphan crushing machine will crush all in the end. Not just the orphans.

No single drop considers itself responsible for the flood.

What a bunch of BS. Yeah, I'm sure people working at FACEBOOK are destitute and have no options for any other jobs or employment, they're completely unskilled and just have no fucking options. /S with a CAPITAL S

I do not get the downvotes. We are not talking about wage slaves for amazon here (where it would obviously apply) but software developers for meta. They most likely have tons in savings they could use and with a resume that gave them the current job I really doubt they are out of options. The current job market is bad Im well aware of that, but its also not like FANG turned evil just yesterday. But in the end its also best to not fight among ourselves.

it's a narrative that supports capital and gives people who dgaf cover; hence the votes.

[–] DementedSociety@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

That's not my narrative at all. What I am saying these people CHOSE to work at meta, hense are likey devoid corporate moral standings and would likely get swooped up by the next shitty company that wants to treat humans like profit cattle and since they're STILL at meta, they would likely be okay with it. I'm not generalizing about high skill workers, I'm shitting on people who work at meta.

I was offering a plausible explanation that could address @vogi@piefed's confusion about your downvotes and the narrative I was referring to was the one that @justsomeguy@lemmy.world was sharing.

It seems that the two of us are in closer alignment on this question than you and @justsomeguy@lemmy.world

yes, the poor faang software engineers could possibly find another job. lol

I can't just quit without uprooting the lives of my family

That may be true for you, but it's far from universally true. I have changed jobs several times (maintaining my industry) without even moving or uprooting anything for my family. I would wager most actually have viable alternative options without moving.

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 6 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

i love these down votes against pointing out the irrationality of the narrative that you must uppend your entire life to stop being an asshole.

and despite that it's common knowledge that you'll get better pay if you switch jobs. lol

Especially in tech. It's not a coal mine, tech companies don't prosper on their own.

I've moved around a few times because I didn't like the direction the company I worked for was heading. I didn't have a plan when I moved, but each time I got a good raise.

People don't because it requires effort and it can be scary.

I left my job over moral objections coming up on a year ago. Hundreds of interviews later, still unemployed. I don’t regret my decision, but I’m lucky enough to have a support system. Otherwise, I’d be out of luck.
