My US state did away with some old blue laws in my lifetime. We allowed liquor sales on Sunday, we allowed grocery stores and gas stations to sell real beer (previously 3.2% beer), wine, and weaker mixed drinks.
I was for it at the time, but now I feel like the Sunday sales ban gave employees and often small liquor store owners a needed day off. Apparently a giant brewery owner would pick up all the local liquor store employees with a party bus a few times a year on Sunday and that doesn't happen anymore. The liquor store/gas station sales ban protected a niche for real liquor stores which tend to have much better selection than a grocery store isle.
We do still allow only one liquor store license per person, so there are no chains (except a husband/wife/kid each owning a store with similar branding). I know where to go for wine, for liquor, where to go late at night, and who carries seasonal and foreign products. Some places have discounts for first responders, teachers, military, etc. Some will let your have their cardboard boxes. I would hate for all that to be replaced by Amazon Liquor or Walmart Brews.
In most provinces the government is the only entity allowed to sell alcohol (except beer and wine in groceries and gas stations).
Being able to buy liquor made in other provinces would be really good, as right now the only way is to drive to the distillery (in another province) and bring it back yourself.
This has nothing to do with changing the liquor laws for direct sales, but removing trade barriers between provinces.
And we're mostly talking about Alberta and BC here.
