I generally prefer text messaging, but there are instances when a synchronous communication method has its merits:

  • when playing video games with friends, or just shooting the shit after dinner, a voice call (usually on Discord) works best.
  • when I need to vent to a friend about more serious stuff, I prefer a voice call as well (this is mostly just so there’s no screenshots but also my messages would be so longwinded)
  • when something is time-sensitive or requires immediate back and forth (e.g. I’m at the supermarket to pick up dinner and I want to ask my SO what they want to eat)
  • video chats are reserved for calls with my mum (we usually chat for like 2 minutes so that she knows I’m okay and to check if there are any news), my SO when they go abroad for work, and seldom my nieces (because they are lovely girls and I love to chat with them)

Once again, texting takes precedence unless it’s one of these instances, which all consider people I’m comfortable around. I still dread sometimes having to call someplace to make an appointment.

Yes! Thank you! There is a time and place for calls.
