For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is a trio of Sailor Moon films: Sailor Moon R The Movie (1993), Sailor Moon S The Movie (1994), and Sailor Moon SuperS The Movie (1995). Sailor Moon Day (June 30) is coming up, and the people demanded a Moon night, so here it is. Magical schoolgirls transform and battle one-off menaces with the power of love, friendship, and stock footage. They’re pretty good.

After that is The Blood of a Poet (1932), a 50-minute surreal French fantasy from renowned auteur Jean Cocteau, whose Beauty and the Beast (1946) and Orpheus (1950) we previously watched. It consists of four vignettes, centering mostly on an artist’s strange struggle against a statue he creates that suddenly comes to life, inviting its creator to step through a portal into a mirror universe where everything is weird. The two also decide to play a game of cards, for good measure, to discover whether humanity’s creations can surpass their masters. This is one of Cocteau’s most famous works, and is considered a landmark in early avant-garde film.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Hextube, right here:

Be there, comrades!
