I mean the way I look at it as a veteran, the US is my home. I'm going to go fight for it. I want to be proud to be able to fly the American flag next to the pride flag and for it to feel genuine.
That second half is my point. Right now, our government is doing precious little I'm proud of. There are various states fighting the good fight, and states in my own area have stepped-up in interesting ways, the Stars and Stripes is being wielded like a bludgeon world-wide at the moment.
Make no mistake, I grew up saying the Pledge of Allegience even though it was against the religion I was raised-in, but if I'm bothering with a flag-code compliant display of the flag, its gonna have a lot of company. I'm not exactly gonna fly any other country's flag on a boat in International waters or anything like that, I just prefer my boisterous, irreverent "flag-waving" with more booze, fireworks, and exposed-skin than can rightly be called "patriotic".
I'm more likely to build my own caucasian death couch and steal ole' boy's tag-line for it than to ever resemble a true "flag-waiver" ... I'm sure the way I live, IRL if not here, gets the point across, for anyone who isn't completely deluded about what our country truly represents on its best days.
