Why did Reagan let out all of the Asylums and close them? I get they probably that they were not the best kept but it was at least a step forward with meds and care and everything in between. (lemmy.world)

Because defunding public health institutions was and is a major component of modern Republican ideology, under the thinking that the free market, their deity, will provide.
