Even a massive home isn't that necessary, IMHO.
My parents live in a massive house and, as they age, it's more of a nuisance to keep it all clean than anything. The pool and the BBQ areas are barely used, same thing for my brother, but he's way younger.
If I had like, 3~4 kids, I can see the idea of living in a 2-story house with lots of space, but since it's just me and my partner, I'd settle around at living in a place with 100-120m² of built area. The garden could be about that size as well. That's enough and makes it cleanable without having to depend on housecleaners to maintain the house organized. Again, just my take.
