There will come a moment, it may already be arriving, when American global primacy is no longer the organizing assumption of international life.
When the dollar is no longer the automatic global reserve currency.
When the carrier group in the strait is no longer the automatic guarantee of compliance.
When the Security Council veto is no longer the automatic shield for American client states.
When the State Department statement of "deep concern" no longer functions as a ceiling on what other countries are permitted to do.
When that moment arrives, when the spell fully breaks in the institutions and not just in the streets, the question of what comes next will be urgent and genuinely open.
And there will be Americans who are ready for that question.
Who have been building toward an answer that is more honest, more just, more genuinely internationalist than anything the American empire has managed in eight decades of claiming to represent those values.
They exist.
They are not nothing.
But there will also be a much larger group that arrives at that moment unprepared.
That has spent their lives inside the psychological comfort of unchallenged primacy and has no framework for what it means to be a country among countries.
A powerful country, still.
A significant country.
But not the indispensable nation.
Not the last best hope.
Not the city on a hill from which the rest of the world is supposed to take its cues.
Just a country.
With a history that will require, finally, full accounting.
With a foreign policy that will require, finally, genuine consequence.
With a population that will need to discover, perhaps for the first time in their national experience, what it feels like to be answered back.
That disorientation is coming.
The only question is whether it becomes a reckoning or a rage.
The whole world is watching to see which one they choose.
We have seen what their rage looks like.
We are hoping, with appropriate skepticism, that this time they choose differently.
