To be honest when I found out that it needs Steam to work properly I lost most interest. I guess it's just not my use case

Totally fair. There are lots of controllers that do similar things with wider use.

On Linux there'll probably be open drivers pretty soon, once the driver-writing nerds get their hands on these. No idea about Windows though.
