SVGs supports fractional scaling better and can be sharper than icons given proper rendering, though I have seen cases, such as with the LO icons, where the rendering was super blurry for some reason.
This is not a proposal to stop using SVG, it's just a fun re-imagination of Gnome if we all still used low resolution CRT displays.
