I'm going to finish reading Mary Beard's books on Rome then I'll go check it out. I want the exhibition to feel like a greatest hits tour rather than discovering something new

Lindsey Davis' books about her Roman detective Falco are a good way to get across the late empire without tears. Poseidon's Gold is a good place to start. Also Venus in Copper and The Iron Hand of Mars.
