State Attorney General James Uthmeier warned NFL officials Wednesday that the Rooney Rule and other similar hiring policies are “illegal” under Florida’s civil rights laws. In a letter to Commissioner Roger Goodell, Uthmeier pressed the NFL to confirm by May 1 it would no longer enforce its policies requiring teams to interview minority candidates, including women, or else the state could take “civil rights enforcement action.”

Civil rights... for who exactly? Your right to interview only white people?

The rule is stupid. NFL teams interview these candidates out of obligation and then never hire them. It's a meaningless rule. Getting rid of it won't do anything.

The rule is absolutely stupid since the NFL clearly has no interest in enforcing the spirit of it in the first place. Interviewing the same handful of people that aren't interested in the job, but are minorities doesn't really help anyone.

Even if the rule was useful (wasn't Tomlin a result of it?), that would just mean that the best candidate was still chosen.

Tomlin wasn't the only minority coach interviewed that cycle. Clearly the rule has resulted in more interviews but it's impossible to say that anyone was hired specifically because of it.

Most of the time these teams head into the offseason with a candidate in mind, have interviews, and then hire the guy they wanted the whole time.
