It might be stupid by why does an employer have a say whether or not his employees unionize?

They don't, really. They can refuse to recognize the union (i.e. refuse to negotiate with the collective bargaining representative) but then the union can petition the government to force recognition. I don't know the exact details of how all that works though, especially now.
