I was traveling at night along a coastline with sheer cliffs. It was already pitch black out, starting to get foggy, and I was unsure if I was on the right road. I saw the lights from a restaurant on the outskirts of a small town I hadn't reached yet, so I pulled in. A woman who worked there stopped her casual conversation with a man when she saw me--my anxiety must have been showing--and asked if she could help me. I asked for directions, she assured me I was going the right way, and as I was leaving she asked me if I'd like to sit and have a cup of coffee on the house before heading out again. I didn't take her up on the offer, but thanked her and headed out again.
It was such a tonic for my nerves. I'll never forget it. Such a small kindness can do wonders.
