Zorgit made this one for Wikipedia for example.

Yours is a sinusoid, but looks like it could have been a cycloid.

explain why the red line is not the same as the line in the original content, if the circles are moving the same way

Tricky, right?

It's because there is "friction" and the part of the circle touching the line can't move relative to it, and so you get that "cusp" shape.

Maybe someone else can give a better explanation, I haven't had any coffee yet.
